RECLAMATION

Water Reclamation

Once water goes into the drain and begins its journey down our pipes, it ends up at either the Kanapaha Water Reclamation Facility or the Main Street Water Reclamation Facility, where we treat and beneficially reuse 6 billion gallons of water each year

Treatment Process

GRU utilizes biological microorganisms, or what we affectionately call, “bugs,” in our treatment process. These naturally occurring bugs eatbreak down and clean the organic waste that flows from your homes to our plants. Our favorite bug, the water bear, not only has a hearty appetite for poop but can survive the vacuum of outer space. Watch this video to learn more

GRU’s Main Street facility is undergoing a major renovation to reliably serve our community for years to come.

Kanapaha Lab

In our Florida Department of Health-certified water reclamation lab, which serves both Kanapaha and Main Street facilities, our technicians test about 4,800 samples of treated water every year to ensure we are returning clean water to the environment. In a recent testing proficiency study, our lab results were 100% acceptable. Watch a short video of our lab technicians at work.

Future Planning

Water reclamation facilities require constant upkeep to ensure they can meet our community’s long-term needs. We recently replaced our 10th wastewater aerator at Kanapaha and have two more to go. Watch a brief video of the replacement. We are also upgrading our Main Street facility to increase capacity and ensure reliable treatment for years to come.

On the Job

Our state-certified reclamation facility operators work 24/7/365 to monitor flows and ensure our plants properly treat water for beneficial reuse. Their work is essential to achieving 100% beneficial reuse of our reclaimed water, an accomplishment our community has proudly maintained for many years.
