Environmental Commitment
GRU beneficially reuses all of the water that’s treated at our reclamation facilities for environmental restoration efforts such as Sweetwater Wetlands Park, aquifer replenishment, irrigation and industrial uses.
Sweetwater Wetlands Park
The 225-acre Sweetwater Wetlands Park, which includes a 125-acre constructed wetland, is an innovative approach to achieving water quality standards by naturally filtering water from Sweetwater Branch. This reduces nutrient loading before releasing clean water to Payne’s Prairie, protecting the aquifer and creating a natural wildlife habitat. And if that’s not cool enough, the park is shaped like a gator’s head.
Sweetwater Outreach & Environmental Education
In addition to its environmental benefits, Sweetwater has 3.5 miles of walking trails, boardwalks, and viewing platforms. GRU frequently hosts students at the park for STEAM days and other events that inspire young learners. The park has also become a renowned destination for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers.
Our innovative wetland projects naturally filter water and return it to the aquifer, helping support groundwater levels and our springs.
SW Nature Park
GRU is working with several community partners to create a groundwater recharge wetland park in southwest Gainesville. The 75-acre Southwest Nature Park will be a series of shallow wetland basins that boost aquifer levels and support flows to the Santa Fe River and surrounding springs while providing a wildlife habitat and walking trails.
