GRU’s CUP
Our consumptive use permit, or CUP, determines how much water GRU can withdraw from the aquifer to serve its customers while also protecting the environment. GRU renewed its CUP in June 2026. This permit has a 30-year duration and allows our community to use up to an average of 34.6 million gallons per day (mgd).
Our Wells
GRU water is pumped from 15 wells that are safeguarded not only by ordinances and a protective layer of clay but also by 7,100 acres of conservation land that safeguards the aquifer against possible contamination.
GRU and its customers take conservation seriously. In fact, residential customers use 30% less water than the regional average.
Constant Upkeep
We continually rehabilitate our wells to ensure reliable service to more than 200,000 residents. One example is the recent rehab of Well No. 12, which is 500 feet deep. This week-long project required lowering one segment at a time by crane. Watch a short video of the rehab.
Wetland Protection
We not only protect the aquifer against possible contamination with our 7,100-acre wellfield, but we also take measures to ensure our withdrawals do not harm other water users or water bodies. One way we do this is through routine monitoring of on-site wetlands to ensure adequate surface water levels.
